[Also in Group XXIX] Chucks.-Chuck jaws 13 are actuated by levers 16 rocked by the plunger 15 of a fluidpressure piston 11. A pump 2 supplies fluid to a pipe 6, and with the distributer 18 in the position shown, the fluid enters a pipe 17a and acts on the left of the piston 11 to keep open the chuck jaws. When the piston reaches its extreme rightward position, the pressure rises until a pressure-controlled contact MCa causes actuation of an electromagnet EV, whereby the distributer slide 19 is lowered and directs fluid into a pipe 17b to move the piston 11 leftward and close the chuck jaws, until at the end of the stroke another pressure-controlled contact MCb is operated. In each case the fluid from the exhaust side of the jack passes to a tank 1 via a pipe 24. A pressure-regulating valve BP1 and a pressure gauge are associated with pipe 6. Turning.-The pump 2 also supplies fluid to a tool-feed device 9, comprising a piston 35. With the parts in the position shown, fluid is fed to the left of the piston 35 to retract a tool 37 via a distributer 43 and a pipe 42a. Upon energizing an electromagnet EVD, the distributer slide 49 is lowered so that fluid is directed through a pipe 42b to move the piston 35 to the left, the fluid exhausting from the other side of the piston passing through pipe 42a, a passage 44a, a pipe 45, and a bore 46b into the lower space 50b of another distributer, and thence to the tank 1 by a pipe 47b. When the tool approaches the workpiece, a cam 38 closes a contact 40 and energizes the electromagnet EVR of the other distributer, and causes lowering of the coacting slide 51, whereupon discharge through pipe 47b is prevented and the flow to the tank 1 is directed via passages 46a, 47a and a regulating valve R, whereby the rate of feed is controlled. At the end of the work-cycle, a contact 41 is operated by a cam 39 and de-energizes the electromagnets EVD, EVR, whereupon the tool 37 is retracted at maximum speed. Another pressure-regulating valve BP2 and a pressure gauge M2 are associated with pipe 7. A number of regulating valves may be arranged in cascade for sequential operation.</p>
