The method involves increasing hardness of reference distance control in a distance control system if a determined probability for potential moving of third party vehicles (2, 3) lies over a preset probability value. Preset reference distance (5) is adapted to a momentary traffic situation such that the potential movement of the third party vehicles is enabled during existence of one of preset emergency situations by enlarging the reference distance. The potential movement of the third party vehicles is controlled during non-existence of the preset emergency situation.
