The instrument (10) has an instrument section (18) provided on a portion of a cylindrical outer surface with a coating reflecting ultrasound. The instrument section is insertable into a patient body, is formed in a shape of hollow shaft (20), and is made of metal i.e. stainless steel. The instrument section exhibits diameter (32) in a region of 0.5 mm to 5 mm, and the coating exhibits thickness in a region of 10 micro meter to 2 mm. The coating is produced by physical- or chemical gas vapor deposition or by sol-gel technique. The coating is formed from electrically insulating material, non-oxide ceramic material, silicon carbide, boron nitride, mixed oxide ceramic, yttrium, yttrium oxide, aluminum, boron, silicon, carbon, diamond, or zircon.
