The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (5) in a reference mode of an operation. A fuel amount is introduced into a combustion chamber (3) by an intake manifold injector (9). Another fuel amount is directly introduced into the combustion chamber by a combustion chamber injector (7). Controller output signals (31) of a Lambda controller (29) are determined and required for regulating a Lambda value (25) of an exhaust gas stream leaving the combustion chamber. The intake manifold injector and/or combustion chamber injector are adapted by the controller output signals.
