[Class 74 (ii).] Patterned fabric is produced on a circular knitting- machine by knitting a predetermined number of courses with one or more yarns and, during such action, suspending knitting on selected needles, then changing the yarn or yarns and, at a predetermined course or courses, causing the selected needles to clear their loops and to knit the other yarn or yarns. To enable the selected needles 1 to retain their loops a cam 6, adjustable to two posit.ons, is provided; in one form the selected needles have shorter butts than the remainder, and are unaffected by the cam 6 and so pass into a "half course" track 3. Alternatively the needle-selecting means may be as described in Specification 314,175 [Class 74 (ii), Knitting &c.]. The cam 6 and track 3 may be employed for producing tuck stitches on the selected needles. In a ri) machine a cam system may be piovided for the plain needles so that those needles hold the loops while the rib needles continue to knit for any number of courses for forming a welt, the seam or join of which normally appears on the outside of the fabric. |
