[Class 83 (iii).] A spindle stopping mechanism for a multiple spindle lathe is arranged to stop either one or a number of spindles in predetermined positions to allow chucking, end-milling or cross-drilling to be done. Each spindle 2 mounted with ball races in a carrier 3 is provided with a clutch 6 and shifter fork 8, the latter slidable on a spindle 25 secured to a spider 5 which extends between the spindles and is fixed to the carrier. A slidable shaft 18 mounted centrally in the spider has, keyed to one end, a collar 26 with a projection 27 which engages, in the operative position, one of the clutch shifters 8, the other end of the shaft is squared to fit a recess in a bracket 13 slidable on rods 14, 16 and moved by means of cams 10, 11. By turning the shatt 18 m the bracket 13 the abutment 27 is brought into position to operate a clutch shifter in any one of the spindle positions, if the abutment is made larger as shown in Fig. 4, more than one spindle can be stopped at the same time. |
