The method involves actuating adjustable ink dosing elements that are arranged transverse to a printing device in zones. A difference of an actual value and a target value of a measured value for coloring in the zones on a printing substrate is determined. An adjustment of the ink dosing elements is carried out by a controller. Adjustment values for a part of the elements are corrected, and differences of the adjustment values from a correlation function between the adjustment of the elements and area coverage in the zones are provided for determination of a correction value to be applied. An independent claim is also included for a printing machine comprising a printing unit.
