The engine (10) has a cylinder block (12) and a bearing cap that is separated from the block by a break separation of a bearing cap from crankshaft supporting ribs of the block along break separation lines. The lines are introduced at sides of a horizontal plane, where the lines are downwardly inclined from the plane to outer edges of the cap under pre-determined angles. Sections of the ribs are enlarged over the lines and are formed with a larger cross-sectional area to reduce load concentrations, where the block is formed adjacent to the crankshaft. An independent claim is also included for a method for reducing a load concentration in rib walls of an engine cylinder block.
