[Class 46.] In a filtering device for liquids under high pressure, e.g. fuel oil for internalcombustion engines, of the kind in which the liquid inlet and outlet are connected respectively to two sets of channels which intercommunicate through narrow filtering slits formed between the bore of a casing and a plug positioned therein, a t least one set of the channels are formed on the bore of the casing. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the casing 1 is provided with a conical or cylindrical bore 2 containing a plug 8, the bore 2 being provided along its length with a number of channels 3 which are separated by narrow filtering slits 18 formed between the bore 2 and the plug 8. The plug 8 is provided at the ends with cylindrical parts 9, 10 which bear against rings 6, 7 positioned in recesses 4, 5 in the casing, a flange 11 carried by the part 9 resting on the ring 6. The parts are clamped together by members 12, 13, the member 12 being provided with a liquid inlet 15 and the member 13 co-acting with a tubular nipple 14 provided with an outlet 20. The rings 6, 7 are provided respectively with channels 33, 331 each equal in number to half the number of the channels 3, the rings 6, 7 being positioned so that every alternate channel 3 communicates at the top with a channel 33, whilst the remaining channels 3 each communicate at the bottom with a channel 33<1>. Liquid supplied to the inlet 15 passes through radial passages 16 and an annular groove 17 on the part 9 to the channels 33, thence through the set of channels 3 communicating therewith, the slits 18, and the other set of channels 3 to the channels 331 which communicate through an open space 19 with the outlet 20. In a modification, one set of channels 3 are formed in the bore of the casing and the other in the plug, the channels in the bore being in communication at the top with the liquid inlet and closed at the bottom by the plug, whilst the channels in the plug are closed at the top and communicate at the bottom with the liquid outlet. In further modifications, (1) two helical channels are provided either both in the bore of the casing or one in the bore and the other on the plug, the channel communicating with the liquid inlet being of gradually decreasing cross-section, whilst the other is of gradually increasing cross-section and (2) the channels are in the form of two sets of circular grooves formed either in the bore or in the bore and on the plug respectively.</p> |
