The device (2) has light modules (10-13) and a detector device that is provided for detecting surrounding field of a vehicle (1). The detector device is provided for detecting an obstacle (15) in the surrounding field of the vehicle. The light modules are activated depending on distance (D) between the vehicle and the obstacle, where the distance is detected in close area (14) around the vehicle. The light modules are placed for lighting the obstacle detected at the close area, and a light cone (16) is arranged on the obstacle. An independent claim is also included for a method for assisting a driver of a vehicle.
