A rapid exchange catheter includes a stiff proximal tube 12 and a relatively flexible distal tube 14. The proximal end of the distal tube 14 has a greater outer diameter than the distal end of the proximal tube 12 such that the distal tube includes a taper. A guide wire lumen 22 is provided in the distal tube and an aperture 15 for the guide wire lumen 22 is provided at the junction between the distal tube and the proximal tube. The distal end of the distal tube can have an outer diameter 80-95% smaller that the proximal end. The angle of taper may be up to 0.1 degrees and as low as 0.006 degrees.
