The bearing halves are separated during manufacture by intentional breakage (110), rather than employing e.g. cutting- and finishing operations. The bearing halves can be joined and re-separated subsequently, e.g. during engine maintenance or repair. In the new manufacturing process, they undergo partial heat treatment before or after separation by breakage. This intentionally introduces compensating stresses, or re-shapes the components. Partial heat treatment is applied in predetermined regions (112). These are predetermined by use of a virtual computer model. The regions for partial heat treatment are alternatively determined empirically, by breaking-off reference components without prior partial heat treatment before breaking to cause intentional introduction of compensating stresses. The carbon steel preferably contains 0.35-0.8 wt% of carbon. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the component so manufactured.
