<p>The method involves producing a signal for signaling presence of a child seat (16) on a vehicle seat. A reversible tightening device (17) is controlled depending on the signal such that the reversible tightening device exerts force (F2) on a seat belt (7) in a belt pull-out direction. The reversible tightening device is deactivated during existence of the signal for signaling the presence of the child seat. The signal is produced by deactivation of an airbag device assigned to the vehicle seat. An independent claim is also included for a reversible tightening device for a seat belt of a motor vehicle.</p>
