The system has an extendable load carrier (12) designed such that the load carrier executes a displacement movement that is directed away from a vehicle rear end (10) in case of collision. An actuator is provided for automatic execution of the displacement movement of the load carrier parallel to a vehicle longitudinal direction. A detection unit is provided for detecting type of collision, collision object, impact position and/or direction of the collision object and designed as a camera or sensor. An electronic controller is provided in the system.
