The method involves arranging two electrodes on a sensor element in the form of a solid electrolyte. An electrical quantity, either the voltage or current is changed until the corresponding electrical quantity reaches a predetermined threshold. The changed electric quantity required for achieving the threshold is closed in a quantity characterizing the probe, particularly the temperature of the sensor element. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program for executing the probe operating method; and (2) a computer program product with program code stored on a machine-readable carrier.
