The automatic transmission has a drive shaft (7) and planetary gearing and a chain drive (18) with drive wheel (19) which engages radially at least partly in the axial direction over a shift element (10) which is axially adjoining on its side remote from the gearbox housing wall (2). A servo device (12) of the shift element adjoining the drive wheel of the chain drive is mounted on the side of the shift element facing the said drive wheel. The shift element can be formed as a clutch or brake.
