The engine (1) has a generator (6) operatively connected to water wheels (2, 3) and converting kinetic energy of the water wheels into electric energy. The generator and the water wheels are arranged on a swimming platform (9), which is provided with flow channels (7, 8). Flow funnels (13, 14) comprise an extended flow cross-section when the flow channels are viewed from the top, and are inwardly and upwardly limited at sides. The flow funnels are provided at a front side of the swimming platform when the flow channels are viewed from the top. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a hydraulic engine.
