The method involves scanning electrical measuring values supplied by a piezoelectric sensor (1) during sensor measuring operation. A testing signal portion is determined to determine failure or defectiveness. The sensor is pressurized with an electrical test pulse sequence. Oscillating resonance signal response of the pulse sequence is detected as the testing portion from a measuring signal and is compared with a preset oscillating reference response. Failure or defectiveness of the sensor is indicated or signalized, when preset deviation between the signal and reference responses exists. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring a piezoelectric sensor.
