Embodiments of the present invention relate to communication field, especially disclose a method, a repeater and a submarine cable system for monitoring fiber line status. Said repeater comprises: a first optical amplifier, a second optical amplifier, a first gating unit, a second gating unit, a first coupler, a second coupler, a third coupler, a fourth coupler; constructing an In-to-In loop back path between the input end of the first optical amplifier and the input end of the second optical amplifier via the first coupler, the fourth coupler and the first gating unit; constructing an Out-to-Out loop back path between the output end of the first optical amplifier and the output end of the second optical amplifier via the second coupler, the third coupler and the second gating unit. Adopting the repeater with above structure can implement monitoring both the status of the uplink fiber and the status of the downlink fiber in the submarine cable at a single end of the submarine cable system.
