A method and system for transmitting downlink control information is disclosed in the present invention wherein the system comprises a base station and user equipment. The base station is configured to transmit the downlink control information to the user equipment according to a transmission mode X. And the user equipment is configured to receive the downlink control information and to obtain the downlink control information according to the downlink control information format corresponding to the transmission mode X. Using the present invention, eight-layer spatial multiplexing technique based on the reference signals which orient the demodulation of the physical downlink shared channel can be supported at most in the release R10 of LTE-Advanced, the higher-order multiple-input multiple-output transmission is enabled and the system performance is improved.
