[Class 99 (ii).] Apparatus for joining paper and like flexible sheet material, particularly in the formation of containers for solids or fluids, by means of overlapping tongues, as described in Specification 337,810, [Class 99 (ii), Pipes, tubes, &c.], comprises a mandrel having a series of dies coacting with a punch to cut out a series of tongues in the parts to be joined, one part being then moved over the other, so that the tongues of one part overlap the uncut material of the other part. The parts are then pressed together, and may be waxed or otherwise proofed. An apparatus suitable for producing containers of the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3 from blanks of the form shown in Fig. 1 comprises a mandrel 1, Fig. 5, below which is a clamping-member 10 mounted on a pivot 11. The blank is placed in position with the part A on the member 10, which is then raised bv the operation of a pedal to clamp the blank against the underside of the mandrel. The further action of the pedal raises pivoted folding - members, which bend the edges D of the blank over the rounded edges of the mandrel. The part B of the blank is then bent over the end of the mandrel, and is laid along the parts D and held in position by a spring clip 20. A hand-lever 7 is then operated to bring a piercing- head 6 down on the blank, so as to cause punch teeth 21, Fig. 9, on plates 22 to enter the die apertures 23 in the mandrel and to punch lines of tongues T out of the overlapping parts of the blank, the incision of each tooth forming three sides of a rectangle. The hand-lever is then released, and the head 6 rises slightly but is retained by a catch 25. A member 27, which is spring-pressed against the blank, and has indiarubber &c. on its underside, is then moved endwise by a hand-lever 28 and draws the part B of the blank over the parts D, so as to cause the tongues and apertures to interlock, as shown in Fig. 10. The container body is then withdrawn from the machine and is placed on a plain mandrel, the upper surface of the joint being then rolled with a rolling-pin, so as to produce the effect shown in Fig. 11. |
