[Class 106 (i).] In a perforated-cardcontrolled statistical machine a single cardcolumn controls a number of type-bearing members, e.g. two. For this, the column is divided into sections, e.g. two, each section having a special auxiliary perforation, the presence or absence of which decides the values of the remaining holes in the section. In the construction shown, the invention is applied to a statistical machine with swinging type sectors, which are differentially set as in Specification 26896/13, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.], and which are also controlled by swinging members of the kind described in Specification 108,942, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &c.]. In a card-field embracing five card columns, each column is divided into two sections ; the first section consists of hole positions B .. F and auxiliary hole position A ; the second consists of hole positions H . . L and auxiliary hole position G. Holes B . . F control, through offset extension rods ER, stops S to arrest differentially the heel on a swinging member AS locked to type sector TS No. 1 so as to position one of the type t 0 .. 4 opposite the printing platen P. If the auxiliary hole A is present then the special sensing pin SSP raises stop SSS with its extension AM so that the latter rotates lever LL to release lug AA on TS No. 1. The springs SS cause AA to move to the left-hand end of slot SL so that the member TS No. 1 has an additional movement, which thereby sets one of the type t 5 .. 9 opposite the platen P. The five holes B .. F and special hole A thereby control the setting of ten type t. Similarly the holes H .. L and special hole G control the setting of the second type sector TS No. 2. The nvention may be applied to machines in which the cards are read whilst they are moving; in this case the auxiliary perforations (A and G) would complete a circuit to modify the interpretation of the normal holes of the sections. For example, stops with compound or tapped windings may be used so that part of the winding is energized by normal holes and the whole when an auxiliary hole is also present. Alternatively, stops and actuating means for the latch (LL) as described in Specification 108,942 may be actuated electrically.
