An air conditioner and a method for controlling the same are provided. The control system of the air conditioner includes an indoor control panel and an outdoor control panel. The outdoor control panel is a heavy-current control panel connected with a 220V power supply, which includes an indoor fan control module, an outdoor fan control module and a compressor control module. The indoor control panel is a weak-current control panel, and includes a display device control module and a swing motor control module. The control system further includes a refrigerant leakage control module, through which the temperature of the indoor heat exchanger or the outdoor exchanger and the pressure of low pressure part of the cycle pipeline are detected, and the leakage of the air condition system can be discovered timely and user security can be ensured.
