PURPOSE: A touch input device of a portable terminal and a method thereof for reducing the complexity of an application control are provided to control the application through simple touch input. CONSTITUTION: When a touch input is sensed while executing an application, a control command determining unit(102) confirms an area touched by a user. The control command determining unit compares the identified area and a control command table. The control command determining unit confirms an application control command corresponding to the area of the touch input. A controller(100) controls the operation of the application by using the application control command.
