The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (1) comprising an exhaust gas recirculation system (8) and at least one exhaust gas turbocharger (7), wherein the exhaust gas is conducted via divided, separately controllable flow paths to the exhaust gas turbine (7b) of the exhaust gas turbocharger (7) and to the exhaust gas recirculation system (8). The flow path to the exhaust gas turbine (7b) is controlled by means of at least one first valve (9) and the flow path to the exhaust gas recirculation system (8) is controlled by means of at least one second valve (11). The aim of the invention is to reduce the emissions of the internal combustion engine (1) in the simplest manner possible with efficient fuel consumption. This is achieved in that the first and the second valves (9, 11) are actuated in a phase-shifted manner, wherein the first valve (9) opens during a high-pressure phase of the exhaust stroke and the second valve (11) opens during a low-pressure phase of the exhaust stroke. |
