A method for data transmission and a system for Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) are provided in the present invention. The method includes: the indication information is carried in the upstream or downstream frames transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver so that the receiver discards, according to the indication information, the information which is in the upstream or downstream frames and is not required to be processed by the receiver. The present invention extends the types of data transmitted in the GPON system and effectively disposes the idle bandwidth.
