A tetherless killswitch system is provided for a powered boat 100 for cutting power to the boat's engine and immobilising the vessel in the event that an operator 102 loses control of the boat or is thrown overboard. The killswitch system includes ultrasonic sensors 110 for scanning an area where an operator 102 normally pilots the boat 100 in order to detect the presence or absence of an operator 102 in the area. A controller is programmed to generate a killswitch signal in response to the sensors 110 indicating the absence of an operator 102 within the area. The killswitch signal automatically cuts off power to the boat's engine. The killswitch system may further include a calibration routing for identifying permanent and non-permanent objects within the search area, to prevent incorrect generation of a killswitch signal. |
