Apparatus for detecting vertical checks in the finish of translucent containers (32) while rotated. A first dark field arrangement of light source (40) and sensor (42) scan a first illuminated area (40a) for vertical checks and a second dark field arrangement of light source (44) and sensor (46) scan a second illuminated area (44a) for vertical checks, and an information processor (60) is for determining the angular positions of the vertical checks.
