Sliding valves.-A device for isolating the combustion chamber or chambers of an internal combustion engine from the carburettor comprises a flange-shaped body 1 having an extension 5 in which is normally housed a slide 4 which may be moved transversely to close the mixture passage 3 through the body 1, the latter being inserted between the induction pipe flange and the carburettor or engine. The slide 4 is retained in the open position by a spring 10 which is enclosed in a cylindrical extension 8 of the slide. The abutment for the inner end of the spring is provided by a fixed bar 13, opposed slots 12 being cut in the spring housing 8 to permit the necessary axial movement. The slide is retained in the closed position, against the pressure of the spring, by a catch 14 which engages with a recess 17 in the extension 8. The member 14 is preferably the retractable portion of a rotary barrel-type lock 16. When in the closed position, the outer end of the extension 8 is flush with the housing 7.
