PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starting system which improves a starting response at a start of an engine by setting suitable delay time periods for a key start and a restart, respectively. SOLUTION: A starter is equipped with: a pinion driving solenoid 8 for pushing out a pinion movable body (a pinion 6 and a clutch) toward a ring gear; and a motor power feed switch 9 for opening/closing a main contact, and the starter is configured so that the solenoid and the switch are independently controllable. For the key start where the engine is started by an on operation of an IG key 24 and for the restart where the engine is restarted in the process of stopping, given delay time periods are set between both the timings, respectively, in order to delay timing for driving a motor with respect to timing at which the pinion 6 meshes with the ring gear.
