Waste treatment process and apparatus

A process for the treatment of waste, comprises a gasification step where waste is treated in a gasification unit 1 in the presence of oxygen and steam to produce an offgas and a non-airborne, solid char material, and a plasma treatment step where the offgas and the non-airborne, solid char material are subjected to plasma treatment in a separate plasma treatment unit 5 in the presence of oxygen and optionally steam. The process has advantage of producing less solid waste and hazardous wastes than other waste treatment processes.
