<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear encoder which reduces rise time at power ON. <P>SOLUTION: The linear scale is provided with: an increment index part which records two or more pieces of information on a position of increment as positional information at specified pitches, a reference point position index part which records two or more pieces of information on the position of a reference point different from the position of increment at specified pitches, and an absolute index part which records an absolute signal that has positional information different from that of the increment position and the reference point position. The combination of absolute signals included between adjacent arbitrary reference point positions is set so as to be different from any combination of absolute signals included between the other reference point positions. A signal processor reads the combination of absolute signals based on the detection signals from the detector of a detecting head, and compares it with a table stored in advance, to determine the absolute position on the linear scale of a movable part. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
