PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester which has an isocyanate group in a side chain and/or at a terminal, easily undergoes molecular chain extension, hardly suffers molecular weight reduction by hydrolysis, and emits little odor due to a liberated isocyanate compound. SOLUTION: The polyester has a group represented by formula (i) in a side chain in a molecular chain and/or at a molecular terminal and has a carboxyl group concentration of≤5 equiv./ton, wherein Q is an aliphatic group, an alicyclic group, an aromatic group or a di- to tetravalent bonding group which is a combination of these and may contain a hetero atom.
