PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tripod for a surveying instrument, which enables easy fine adjustment of the height of the tripod by simply and easily adjusting extension and contraction of leg parts. SOLUTION: Each leg part 13 which is so attached to the leg head part of the tripod as to be openable has: fixed leg pipes 14 which are supported so that the upper portions are rotatable in relation to the leg head part; a movable leg pipe 15 which is so supported as to be movable slidably along the leg part in the longitudinal direction in relation to the fixed leg pipes 14; and a fixing device 16 which is provided for fixing and retaining the movable leg pipe 15 in a desired relative position in relation to the fixed leg pipes 14. The fixed device 16 is equipped with: a shaft 18 which is provided in extension along the movable leg pipe 15 in the direction of the sliding movement; an engaging plate 26 which is movable unitedly with the movable leg pipe 15 and so provided as to be displaceable between a first state of frictionally engaging with the shaft 18 and a second state of separating from the shaft 18; and a coil spring 33 which actuates the engaging plate 26 toward the first state.
