<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightning arrester including a non-linear resistor element having a sufficiently large size necessary for resisting abnormal voltage caused by lightning surge; and to provide a method for manufacturing the lightning arrester. <P>SOLUTION: When it is supposed that a lightning current having predetermined specifications is allowed to flow into the lightning arrester, the size of the non-linear resistor element is set so that a maximum value of fracture energy Q expressed by a product of thermal stressσin a radius direction of the non-linear resistor element and extensionΔr in the radius direction is a management value Q<SB>L</SB>and less.
