The apparatus consists of a first inner portion pivotally connected to an anchorage that can be fixed to a vehicle floor and that is movable in a horizontal plane, and a second outer portion connected to the first portion that is movable in a vertical plane. A wheelchair can thus be moved to be stored in a vehicle with its wheel axis transverse to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. Additionally the wheelchair can be positioned alongside a door using only the first and second portions, and the wheels are placed in a vertical plane so as to make the wheelchair more accessible in the event of a power failure.
