<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a private branch exchange with a function for notifying a user of a terminal that a voice message is registered when the message is registered by a voice mail function or the like. <P>SOLUTION: In the private branch exchange of a private branch radio system having a recording and playback means 18, when the voice message is recorded in the recording and playback means 18 by the voice mail function, a control section 11 transmits an incoming telegram to a portable machine 16 of a voice mail user to be a destination of the message. At this time, the control section 11 sets a character code, for example, "there is a voice mail", showing existence of the voice message as a call originating number of the incoming telegram. The portable machine 16 which receives the incoming telegram transmits a response signal to the control section 11, simultaneously recognizes the character code "there is a voice mail" of the call originating number as a caller number, and displays the character code on a display section of the portable machine 16 as it is.
