PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining a total number of specimen particles to be extracted from a population for acquiring a prescribed, reliable distribution of grain diameters and to provide its program. SOLUTION: Ratios of a lower limitμ<SB>g1</SB>and an upper limitμ<SB>g2</SB>within a confidence interval on a population geometric mean diameterμ<SB>g</SB>to a geometric mean diameter x<SB>g</SB>of specimens and ratios of a lower limitσ<SB>g1</SB>and an upper limitσ<SB>g2</SB>within a confidence interval on a population geometric standard deviationσ<SB>g</SB>to a geometric standard deviation s<SB>g</SB>of the specimens are determined on the basis of the following equations to determine each number N of particles.
