Disclosed is an internal combustion rotary engine with improved vane control through the use of rollers. The engine comprises a rotor with a plurality of slots (20), each slot receiving one of a plurality of vanes (42) which move in a radial direction. The engine further comprises a central shaft (110), an engine block, and first and second side cover arrangements (24). The arrangements have a roller cam (38) arranged on their inner side. Cam rollers (44, 50) are rotatably mounted on opposite side edges of each vane in order to control radial movement by their engagement with the roller cam. When the rotor rotates, the roller cams in co-operation with the cam rollers move the vanes in their slots such that the vanes consecutively move between an extended position and a retracted position, with an outer end of each vane being in sealing proximity with the internal surface of the block.
