<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a memory device which is improved in integration or reliability, and to provide a method for driving the memory device. <P>SOLUTION: A ratio of at least one cell state is determined in a memory unit of a memory device. A program state in the memory unit is determined on the basis of the determined ratio of at least one cell state concerned. Determining at least one cell state in the memory unit is performed by processing data so that the data may be stored in the memory unit and by storing data deformed in the memory unit by means of a data value distribution function for creating the deformed data having data values which conform to predetermined distributions.
