PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric vacuum cleaner having good usability which eliminates the need for cleaning a light-emitting section and a light-receiving section. SOLUTION: This electric vacuum cleaner includes: the light-receiving section 14 which receives light from the light-emitting section 13 for emitting light to an air passage where dust and dirt flow, and outputs a signal; a soil discriminating means (not shown in the figure) which discriminates whether the variation of the output signal of the light-receiving section 14 depends on soil or not; an exhaust port 20 which discharges the exhaust of an electric blower 1 for generating a suction force; a blower 21 which removes dust and dirt adhered to the light-emitting section 13 and the light-receiving section 14 by jetting out the exhaust; and a switching valve 22 which switches the flow of the exhaust to the exhaust port 20 and the blower 21. The switching valve 22 is switched to the blower 21 side when the adherence of dust and dirt to the light-emitting section 13 and the light-receiving section 14 is discriminated by the soil discriminating means. Thus, dust and dirt adhered to the light-emitting section 13 and the light-receiving section 14 are automatically blown out by the exhaust air from the blower 21. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
