The mechanism (10) has an external valve (22) with an external hollow rod (40), and an annular external valve head (34) sealably supported with respect to an external valve seat (14) of a cylinder head (12) of an engine. An internal valve (24) includes an internal valve rod (26), and an internal valve head (28) sealably supported with respect to an internal valve seat (38) formed in the external valve head. Control units (20) control the displacement of the valves with respect to each other.
