The present invention provides a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating inflammatory gastrointestinal disease, and in particular a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome or gastritis, which comprises patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) extract as an active ingredient. The patchouli extract has a prophylactic and therapeutic action against ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease which are commonly known as inflammatory bowel disease, as it effectively suppresses inflammatory bowel disease induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) and also reduces MPO (myeloperoxidase) activity.
