Fodder flakes of uniform composition and free from dust are obtained from the pulp produced during the extraction of sugar beet, sugar cane or other sugar-containing plant, by centrifuging the pulp, washing it, pressing it and subjecting it to suction to produce a compacted, coherent residue of 27-30 per cent solids content, and flaking this residue. The pulp is centrifuged at 3, (Fig. 1,) to extract juice, washed with hot water in the screw conveyer 4 and at the commencement of its circular passage around one or more filters 20, see Fig. 2, wherein it is pressed by rollers 19 and subjected to suction through the ports 18a, 18b, from which it emerges in the final stage as a coherent residue of 27-30 per cent by weight solid content ; the residue is reduced to flake-like fragments by cutting e.g. using a rotating knife and cross cutter or rotating crusher and drying drum. Three suction filters similar to that shown, 5, may be used and in the final suction filter compressed air is applied through the port 18a in the region 27, (Fig. 2,) to assist in raising the cake on to a lifter blade 10a of the cutter 10, which arrangement replaces the inclined chute 24 and down pipe 25 employed in intermediate stages. |
