The present invention discloses an audio and video interface and a method for displaying negotiation between a display device and a source device, the audio and video interface includes an interface panel. There are audio signal terminals, at least two kinds of video signal terminals, communication signal terminals for performing attribute information interaction of the display device and grounding wire terminals for isolating various video signal terminals on the spatial distribution of the panel arranged on the interface panel. The method includes: the display device transmits communication signal including the display capacity of itself or the state description information to the source device through the communication signal terminals; the source device adjusts audio and video output signal according to the display capacity or the state of the display device, the adjusted audio and video signal is transmitted to the display device through the audio signal terminals and the corresponding video signal terminals. The invention can reduce the complexity between the interface and the cable and reduce the size of circuit board.
