A sterilizable coating comprises an osteogenic protein and an ionic polysaccharide or ionic polysaccharides. The osteogenic protein and the ionic polysaccharide or polysaccharides are provided in a coating in form of a slightly water-soluble polymeric salt. The slightly water-soluble polymeric salt is sterilized with or without an implantable material by radiation sterilization. An increment in alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity is obtained after performing radiation sterilization. The osteogenic protein is present as a homodimer. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing sterilizable coating, which involves mixing a solution or suspension of an osteogenic protein and an ionic polysaccharide or polysaccharide derivative in desired concentration to obtain slurry or suspension, where the obtained slurry is sprayed or coated on implantable material.
