Without reduction in voice recognition accuracy, calling by someone other than a conversation partner and other various sounds are detected by use of sound signals inputted from a plurality of microphones. A hearing aid apparatus corrects the frequency characteristic of a calling voice of someone other than the conversation partner based on a direction along which the calling voice of someone other than the conversation partner comes, the direction being estimated based on sound signals converted through the plurality of microphones. Then, based on other voice data recorded by use of microphones having one characteristic, the hearing aid apparatus compares the calling voice of someone other than the conversation partner, the frequency characteristic of which has been corrected by a frequency characteristic adjustment processing unit, with calling word standard patterns representing phonemic and syllabic features. Through this comparison, the hearing aid apparatus determines whether or not the calling voice of someone other than the conversation partner is a calling word. Then, based on a result of the determination by a calling word determination means, the hearing aid apparatus forms directivity with respect to a direction other than a direction along which a voice of the conversation partner comes. In addition, the hearing aid apparatus corrects the frequency characteristic of the calling voice of someone other than the conversation partner so that the frequency characteristic may be the same as a microphone characteristic in preparing sound standard patterns.
