Embodiments of the present invention provide a breath sampling system (100, 200), comprising: breath receiving means for receiving breath; a sensor (130, 230, 290, 310) for sensing a characteristic of the received breath and outputting an indicative signal (131, 132, 232, 311); a sampling device (160) for sampling the breath, wherein the sampling device (160) is arranged in a sampling conduit such that received breath has a predetermined transit time from the sensor (130, 230, 290, 310) to the sampling device (160); a bypass conduit (146, 246) for allowing breath to bypass the sampling device (160); a valve (170, 270) arranged to selectively direct breath to the sampling device (160) or the bypass conduit (146, 246); and a control unit (140, 240) arranged to receive the indicative signal (131, 132, 232, 311), to determine when the characteristic of the received breath meets a predetermined threshold, and to control the valve (170, 270) to selectively direct the received breath to the sampling device (160) following a delay substantially equal to the predetermined transit time.
