774,903. Artificial eyes. ATTENBOROUGH, Ltd., C. & L. E. March 10, 1955 [March 12, 1954], No. 7268/54. Class 81(2) An artificial eye comprises an implant having a magnet or a magnetizable member therein and embedded in the eyeball and a prosthesis having therein either a magnet or is magnetizable when the implant includes a magnet, and a magnet when the implant includes a magnetizable member. An implant 12, Fig. 3, containing a bar magnet 13 is inserted in the natural eyeball from the rear. It is secured by sutures 29 to the sclera 3 and cornea 2 which are laid within a cup formed by a flange 22 of the implant. The conjunctiva is folded over the sutures 29 to seal them. The magnet and the eyelids 6 hold in position an artificial eye prosthesis 15 incorporating a magnetic member 16. The prosthesis can thus be moved naturally with the eyeball by muscular action. The implant has a socket 14 for a manipulation tool 21, Fig. 6. In a modification, a horseshoe magnet is contained in an implant which is flat on the front surface and is inserted from the front of the eyeball. The implants may be made of methyl methacrylate which may be electrolytically coated with gold or painted. The magnets consist of alloys of aluminium nickel and cobalt. The sutures are made from tantalium wire or nylon. |
