摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device whose utilization efficiency of light can be improved to realize a bright display screen by positively reflecting the light from a back light reflected by a light shielding layer or a reflection layer and recycling the light in a way as to prevent the light from being absorbed by a linear polarizing plate, and an optical element used for the same. <P>SOLUTION: The optical element includes a polarizer 9 which converts the light from a back light source to linearly polarized light, a light reflection region under a light shielding layer 7 which reflects the light of the linearly polarized light converted by the polarizer 9, a transmission region which allows the transmission of the light of the linearly polarized light converted by the polarizer 9 and at least one retardation plate 6 which is arranged so that only the light converted to the linearly polarized light by the polarizer 9 and transmitted through the transmission region is made incident. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
